Chapter 46
Cole
Megâs puffy blue eyes roll beneath fluttering eyelids, her gaze latching on to the space around me.
âMeg?â I say.
I get up from the hospital chair and approach her bedside. âHoney, can you hear me?â
She appears more alert with each blink.
âNice to have you back,â says Kiyana, the nurse assigned to my wife. âHow you feeling?â
Meg blinks so hard that little lines crinkle across her temples. âUm.â
âAirbag hit you pretty hard.â Kiyana grabs Megâs chart and inspects it. âSays here you suffered a traumatic brain injury last year.â She pauses, then approaches my wife. âCan you tell me your name?â
Meg stares at Kiyana a little too long for my liking. Could the airbag have worsened her injury? Caused her symptoms to return, full blown? Oh, God . . . How will Hazel handle this? Seeing her mother back in a hospital bed will break her into pieces.
Sheâs still in school. I havenât told her anything. Not until I have more answers.
I inspect Megâs faceâitâs swollen, and a little red blotch darkens the corner of her eye. That airbag did a number on her.
âIt was that bitch,â Meg says.
I pull my face back, while Kiyanaâs forehead bunches.
âValeria,â Meg says through clenched teeth.
Okayâher memory isnât gone.
And her hatred is aimed at me. But I didnât do this. Why is she so pissed off with me? And Valeria wouldnât do something like this.
âYou think you know who did this?â Kiyana says.
Meg nods ferociously. âUm, yeah. I saw her. Long brown hair. Big sunglasses. White Accent.â
Kiyana sticks a finger up. âHold on. Let me get the police. Theyâve been wanting to ask you some questions.â
She disappears from the small hospital room, leaving me alone with Meg.
âHoney, how do you know it was her?â I ask, trying to be as gentle as possible. âYou just described over fifty percent of women in Bayton Valley. Or even in America, for that matter.â
âIt was her,â Meg says. âWho the hell else would it be? She wanted me dead, Cole. And the only person who would want that is the woman youâre sleeping with.â
My brows snap together. âIâm not sleeping with Valeria.â
She rolls her eyes. âSorry, were.â
I almost wish she had lost some of her memory. Maybe then she wouldnât be so vicious with me.
Even if I try to explain to her that I never slept with Valeria, she wonât believe me. Not when sheâs like this.
âValeria quit two weeks ago,â I say. âWhy would she come for you now?â
Meg lets out an overly fake laugh. âOh, I donât know. To get rid of the wife? I knew she seemed way too nice. Sheâs a good actor. Playing innocent little mother. I almost wanted to like her.â
I freeze, staring wide eyed at the woman before me. Her blond hair is all matted on one side, and deep bags sit beneath her swollen eyes. That scowl on her face isnât doing her any favors, either. She looks possessed.
If I hadnât seen this side of Meg before, Iâd think the accident had caused her soul to bounce out of her body before welcoming in a different one.
