Chapter 46

Cole

Meg’s puffy blue eyes roll beneath fluttering eyelids, her gaze latching on to the space around me.

“Meg?” I say.

I get up from the hospital chair and approach her bedside. “Honey, can you hear me?”

She appears more alert with each blink.

“Nice to have you back,” says Kiyana, the nurse assigned to my wife. “How you feeling?”

Meg blinks so hard that little lines crinkle across her temples. “Um.”

“Airbag hit you pretty hard.” Kiyana grabs Meg’s chart and inspects it. “Says here you suffered a traumatic brain injury last year.” She pauses, then approaches my wife. “Can you tell me your name?”

Meg stares at Kiyana a little too long for my liking. Could the airbag have worsened her injury? Caused her symptoms to return, full blown? Oh, God . . . How will Hazel handle this? Seeing her mother back in a hospital bed will break her into pieces.

She’s still in school. I haven’t told her anything. Not until I have more answers.

I inspect Meg’s face—it’s swollen, and a little red blotch darkens the corner of her eye. That airbag did a number on her.

“It was that bitch,” Meg says.

I pull my face back, while Kiyana’s forehead bunches.

“Valeria,” Meg says through clenched teeth.

Okay—her memory isn’t gone.

And her hatred is aimed at me. But I didn’t do this. Why is she so pissed off with me? And Valeria wouldn’t do something like this.

“You think you know who did this?” Kiyana says.

Meg nods ferociously. “Um, yeah. I saw her. Long brown hair. Big sunglasses. White Accent.”

Kiyana sticks a finger up. “Hold on. Let me get the police. They’ve been wanting to ask you some questions.”

She disappears from the small hospital room, leaving me alone with Meg.

“Honey, how do you know it was her?” I ask, trying to be as gentle as possible. “You just described over fifty percent of women in Bayton Valley. Or even in America, for that matter.”

“It was her,” Meg says. “Who the hell else would it be? She wanted me dead, Cole. And the only person who would want that is the woman you’re sleeping with.”

My brows snap together. “I’m not sleeping with Valeria.”

She rolls her eyes. “Sorry, were.”

I almost wish she had lost some of her memory. Maybe then she wouldn’t be so vicious with me.

Even if I try to explain to her that I never slept with Valeria, she won’t believe me. Not when she’s like this.

“Valeria quit two weeks ago,” I say. “Why would she come for you now?”

Meg lets out an overly fake laugh. “Oh, I don’t know. To get rid of the wife? I knew she seemed way too nice. She’s a good actor. Playing innocent little mother. I almost wanted to like her.”

I freeze, staring wide eyed at the woman before me. Her blond hair is all matted on one side, and deep bags sit beneath her swollen eyes. That scowl on her face isn’t doing her any favors, either. She looks possessed.

If I hadn’t seen this side of Meg before, I’d think the accident had caused her soul to bounce out of her body before welcoming in a different one.
